Artificial Intelligence and Everyday Knowledge

Artificial intelligence cannot be treated as an independent object of social life since it has flooded every corner of contemporary society. It completely changed the way we interact, know, and produce knowledge. The various social implementation of artificial intelligence ranges from voice assistants to chess players machines. Each of them encapsulates a conception of interaction, knowledge, and social mind. Each of them engendered different impacts in the way humans relate to knowledge on a daily basis. Consequently, artificial intelligence is not only an issue of scientific knowledge, but also something completely embedded in daily life practices, such as navigating across the cities, recalling a memory, writing an email (and even a narrative), knowing and socializing with others, listening to music, searching for information or creating a piece of art, either a music or a picture. Artificial intelligence can produce representations analogous to human ones, without even understanding our thoughts, feelings, and expectations. This fact draws a boundary on our mutual interactions with these technologies and certainly puts the brakes on what we can expect from them. In this chapter, we explore the different kinds of artificial intelligence systems and their impact on the human process of knowing, interpreting, and producing knowledge socially. Drawing from sociological theories and Philosophy of Mind`s theories, we discuss daily social practices crossed by artificial intelligence in contemporary societies and how they affect our epistemological processes.
