Brazil’s engagement with carbon markets over the past decade has evolved from the exclusive adoption of Kyoto Protocol mechanisms to the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM). In an effort to comply with its Nationally Determined Contribution, the country is positioning itself to leverage existing carbon markets to address emissions from Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors. With land-use change contributing significantly to its emissions, nature-based solutions such as REDD+ and ARR interventions are critical for climate finance mobilization. However, and especially within the Global South, challenges remain in accessing sufficient resources. The success of these markets hinges on properly implementing projects that meet the additionality criteria, essential for ensuring measurable and effective carbon reduction. This paper explores the concept whilst analyzing environmental policy and the context of nature-based solution projects in Brazil.
