The Athos Peninsula. A Living Example of Continuity Over Time
摘要
Mount Athos is an autonomous monastic state within the Greek Republic. It forms one of the three peninsulas of Chalkidiki, in northern Greece. Its distinctiveness relies on the specific character of monastic democracy but also its uninterrupted historical continuity since its foundation by the Byzantine Empire in the ninth century. Mount Athos attracts many comments and raises questions relating to Orthodox mysticism, heritage, history, nature protection, etc. This anthropogeographical approach is an attempt to provide a comprehensive view and perspective of the Athos Peninsula. Is it a monument or a habitat? What are its reproductive mechanisms, what is specific in its organization and settlement pattern, and what is the role of nature? The peninsula may raise interest among people worldwide, but what is it that makes it endure the centuries while preserving its unique character?
