Autofluorescence

Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) imaging is a noninvasive technique for mapping fluorophores in the ocular fundus, utilizing the natural fluorescence of specific molecules. Lipofuscin, a key fluorophore, accumulates in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells due to aging and oxidative stress, making it a biomarker for retinal diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Composed of lipid residues, proteins, and metals, lipofuscin highlights cellular dysfunction. Minor fluorophores, such as collagen and elastin, may also become visible in the absence of RPE cells. This chapter explores FAF imaging and its clinical applications in retinal disease diagnosis.
