Telemedicine, defined as the use of digital means and information sharing to provide health care from a distance or a new way to provide care through remote interaction, involves the utilization of telecommunication and information technologies to transfer clinical data; telemedicine enables remote clinical decision-making independent of physical proximity to the patient. Recently, a wide-scale implementation of telemedicine in several medical specialties has become possible due to significant technological advances, including fast communication technologies. In this chapter, we will review its application in retinal diseases, a high-volume subfield of ophthalmology in which imaging plays a major role; teleophthalmology is mostly used for the detection and management of chronic retinal diseases, mainly diabetic retinopathy. In addition, urgent retinal conditions, which require rapid diagnosis and intervention by a specialist, may be first detected remotely via teleophthalmology through remote access of fundus photographs.
