Thus far, our discussion has focused on electromagnetic plane waves propagating through unbounded media and those incident on plane interfaces. A uniform plane wave is an unbounded and unguided wave in the sense that its electric field fills all spaces and its electromagnetic energy spreads out over the entire space.
