Line Commutated Converter (LCC) is the in use since the mid 1950s. LCC HVDC schemes have historically been used for bulk transfer of power over long distances where this has generally been a more economic alternative when compared with using AC power transmission over long distance overhead lines or through cables. The technology has been used to transfer 12 GW of power over overhead lines rated up to ±1.1 MV using bipole overhead lines spanning a distance of over 3000 km. Some significant applications of this technology are described in this chapter, which also described how the LCC HVDC technology can provide control features that improves the performance of the connected AC systems. Some of these HVDC systems were selected to illustrate the application of point-to-point HVDC links.
