HVDC systems are highly efficient power converters, but they still generate heat losses. These must be cooled in an extremely reliable manner. This chapter describes the basics of such valve cooling systems together with the most important design aspects. Starting from the customer specifications, it is explained how the concept of a cooling system is developed. The most important components are described and how they are integrated into the overall system. Redundancy concepts are discussed together with the requirements for a control system. The final section describes the most important elements of testing, from the manufacturer to handover to the customer.
