Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can be regarded as two clinical entities of the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders. Snoring is caused by vibrations of the pharyngeal soft tissues. OSA is characterized by repetitive upper-airway narrowing or collapse resulting in hypopneas and apneas. The mechanisms leading to this upper-airway obstruction are at present not entirely understood.
