Coral reef ecosystems are experiencing unprecedented degradation due to climate change and anthropogenic activities, threatening marine biodiversity and coastal livelihoods. This study examines a participatory coral reef restoration initiative in which university researchers partnered with a community-based organization to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs. Using a participatory action research approach, the study engaged local stakeholders in all stages of coral reef restoration. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, focus group discussions, direct observations, and systematic coral growth measurements over 12 months. The findings reveal that integrating scientific methodologies with local ecological knowledge enhances restoration outcomes, strengthens community stewardship, and fosters adaptive conservation strategies. The study highlights key challenges, including gaps in marine restoration expertise, resource limitations, and the need for sustained institutional and policy support. Despite these challenges, the project demonstrates that coproduced knowledge and active community involvement lead to more resilient and sustainable conservation initiatives. This research underscores the critical role of universities in bridging scientific inquiry and grassroots conservation efforts, offering a scalable model for community-led ecological restoration. Future studies should explore cost-effective restoration techniques, enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, and develop policy frameworks that institutionalize university-community partnerships for long-term marine ecosystem resilience.
