Landscape Policies of Europe

Signed in October 2000, the European Landscape Convention was the first treaty exclusively dedicated to landscape as a holistic unit of territory. It is an international commitment by European governmental organisations to plan instruments for the progressive development of places while safeguarding their natural and cultural dynamics. The Convention includes provisions that should be understood uniformly by the signatory parties at all administrative levels. This article looks at the different approaches to landscape characterisation and identification developed by these parties according to the definitions and specific measures of the Convention. Its purpose is to comprehend the most significant accomplishments and challenges of its implementation. It also aims to disseminate methodologies in the design of landscape tools concerning political and cultural contexts.
