Developmental literacy disorders are defined, and their aetiological backgrounds elucidated. General features are summarised, and distinctive groups are presented: reading accuracy, reading fluency, spelling and reading comprehension. Different symptomatic constellations are introduced, considering also specific differences between languages and cultures; risk factors are defined. The neurobiological basis of dyslexia, brain networks involved in dyslexia and current explanatory theories of dyslexia are explicated.
