The field of traffic and mobility encompasses road traffic as well as rail, air and water transportation, and data traffic. In contemporary societies, however, road transportation plays the dominant role. The car is deeply ingrained in the mental structures of early motorized societies and was long excluded from political discourse as an unquestioned matter of course. In the meantime, however, the car is in danger of being swallowed up by its success. The first signs of erosion of the socio-technical regime of the automobile can be observed, not least because of its lack of sustainability. However, large infrastructure systems, which include the road network and the car, are characterized by a high degree of path dependency and stability owing to their size and complexity. Two technological trends have been affecting transport and the automobile in particular for some time now: electrification and digitalization. The electrification of drive systems has now gained momentum, whereas digitalization is enabling attractive mobility services beyond the private car. Innovations such as mobility as a service or sharing services have the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of (passenger) transportation. However, it is not only the narrative of postautomobile self-mobility that is still missing. The traditional rules that privilege the private car also still apply. Experiments with innovative mobility concepts that are limited in time and space may offer a way out of this dilemma by generating niches for new mobility practices and thus the opportunity to institutionalize them.
