In this chapter, we focus on “the city” as a field of innovation along the following discursive threads: (1) city as a place for innovative business and home of creative urban dwellers; (2) the significance of technical innovations for urban space; and (3) innovations in the field of urban planning and development. Attributions such as innovative, creative, or intelligent cities seem to suggest that descriptions of innovations in different cities are generalizable. However, we show that in view of the intrinsic logic of cities, the specificities of place and context impact the content and the form of innovations. The findings suggest that innovation research in urban sociology should be contextualized and always be seen in relation to the specificity of the city under investigation. We argue that we are seeing a pluralization of socially relevant spatial figures including territorial space, network space, and trajectorial space that seem to emerge as central figures. At the same time, there is a new focus on the figure of place in social (inter)actions.

摘要
