Scholars struggle to give adequate accounts explaining innovations’ generation, spread, and implications. Many complex innovations—like information infrastructures, artificial intelligence, or renewable energy technologies—take shape as they are enacted across different localities and temporalities. Biographies of artifacts and practices (BoAP) is an approach that enables simultaneous intensification and expansion of analysis across different settings and moments in which new technology is shaped. The findings from its over 20 years of research program coalesce into an extended process theory of innovation, which views technologies emerging as multiple localized assemblages and their gradually evolving interrelations in one or several ecologies of interlinked actors. The resulting biographies commonly feature several generations of design, appropriation, and regulation over years and even decades. In the course of such biographies, generative contestations of and contributions to innovation come not only from industrial actors but also from users, intermediary actors, and regulatory bodies, comprising series of configurational movements in which the technological assemblages, related actor constellations, and their interrelations tend to change profoundly. The BoAP approach assists researchers in keeping pace with these evolving forms and elaborating nuanced, middle-ranged theories of innovation to account for particular sociotechnical domains and times.
