Isocrates

In this chapter, the role and impact of the philosopher and educator Isocrates (436–338) on society and the field of education are discussed. Differing from the other Attic Orators during his time, Isocrates considered himself a philosopher and an educator. To further differentiate himself, he opened his own school of rhetoric around 392 BCE, which enabled him to teach students and future leaders about the importance of civic-minded leadership and civic engagement. In this chapter, Isocrates’s impact on education will be discussed by considering his major influences and mentors, the key contributions he made to the field of education, new insights on his impact on education, and his legacy.
