An essential factor of human health and wellness is the health and wellness of the ecosystems on which humans depend for survival. Yet many human worldviews, including the Western psychology fields, have long mostly overlooked this aspect of human health. Human beings now find themselves in times of unprecedented challenges to the health of the planet, and thereby challenges to the health of human beings, and little is known in the industrialized world about how to conceptualize this interdependence between human health and the health of the natural world. Meanwhile, many lesser heard knowledge systems have, for hundreds of generations, cultivated formidable understandings of how humans can live in a more interdependent and life-supporting manner with the ecosystems of which they are a part.

Meanwhile, many lesser heard knowledge systems have, for hundreds of generations, cultivated formidable understandings of how humans can live in a more interdependent and life-supporting manner with the ecosystems of which they are a part.
