Zombies have had a grip on the Western for more than half a century; however much of what can be found in Japan comes from the twenty-first century. Japanese burial practices mean there are rarely bodies in coffins to rise from the dead and wreak havoc. The majority of the horror coming from Japan tends to focus on creatures that the Japanese people are already familiar with or focuses on horrible physical mutations; however, zombies have now made their way into Japanese popular culture and specifically into anime. The nature of the zombie lends itself to metaphor, allowing for a wide array of zombie stories that range from the cute zombie girl to the shambling horde craving human flesh. This paper will examine four styles of zombies found in anime: the zombie as a metaphor for escape from capitalism, reanimation as slavery, the cute zombie girl, and zombies influenced by American media.
