Night of the Living Fashion Icons: Fashion and Costume in Romero-Era Zombies and Their Progeny

Zombies and fashion? It’s true, zombies are not necessarily the most fashionable of monsters. Yet, even among the slack-jawed, shambling, mindless zombies of the classic “Romero era,” dress is an important feature of zombie film. Anxieties about consumption and consumerism, class positioning, state of emergency, and the absence of individuality are reflected both in the ways that zombies are dressed and the ways living humans respond to dress and fashion around them. In more recent media, as more interest is taken in individuated zombies with active and unique thoughts and desires, fashion becomes a topic of active interest for zombies who can make their own decisions about how to dress as well as how to act. This article explores the meanings of fashion hidden in the folds of even the most ragged zombie suit.
