School is designed to be a haven of safety where caring teachers nurture young, curious minds. While the fear of school shootings is ever-present, horror movies, especially zombie films, generally stay away from educational settings. Two very different zombie films were released in 2018, but they also had similarities that were surprising for the typical zombie mythos. Both were set in high schools. Both were musicals. Both focused on the search for identity, societal expectations, and power dynamics. The first film, released in February of 2018, is the first installment of the Disney Channel’s Z-O-M-B-I-E-S made-for-television movies. The second is Anna and the Apocalypse, a British film based on the 2011 short film “Zombie Musical.” This “Christmas zombie musical” was released in the USA and UK in the 2018 holiday season and, in sharp contrast with the Disney Channel’s offering, is Rated R for “zombie violence and gore, language, and some sexual material.” While the first installment of Disney’s Z-O-M-B-I-E-S explores how a human high school might integrate with the nonthreatening zombies living on the other side of town, Anna is a more traditional (albeit musical) zombies-eating-human-brains film. The films are able to address the concerns of typical high school teenagers as they navigate their school communities and what it means to be a part of society as a whole.
