Richard Pryor as Philosopher: Stand-Up Comedy and Gramsci’s Organic Intellectual

Names like Richard Pryor (1940–2005) and Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937) are not often seen together. Pryor is a famous African American stand-up comedian. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest performers of the twentieth century. He won five Grammy awards, an Emmy, and starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters. Gramsci is an Italian Marxist philosopher known for the writings he produced during his long imprisonment under the Fascist regime of Benito Mussolini. On the surface, a stand-up comedian like Pryor and a Marxist philosopher like Gramsci may appear to create an unlikely connection. However, upon close inspection, a carefully crafted stand-up comedy routine can illustrate ideas and concepts found within the field of philosophy. Pryor, for example, often used his artistic and creative acumen to illustrate the concept of the “Organic Intellectual,” one of Gramsci’s most well-known philosophical concepts.
