An Overview of my Compositional Practice and Collaborations in China

  • Rachel C. Walker

摘要

This chapter focuses on my navigation of the challenges of pursuing creative work as a composer in China, where I studied first as a Visiting Scholar at the China Conservatory of Music, and later at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Since this time, I have directed my energy towards researching Chinese traditional music and composing new works for Chinese instruments. More recently, this has extended into collaborations with living authors writing in both Mandarin and dialects. However, rather than concentrating on theoretical questions of composition, ethnomusicology, or even anthropology, this essay is concerned with logistical matters surrounding my artistic practice: that is to say, how I have approached them in order to establish a fluid working methodology.
