Hypothalamic Hamartoma

This chapter presents a patient with hypothalamic hamartoma developing pharmacoresistant epilepsy. We discuss the electroclinical evolution of epilepsy in patients with hypothalamic hamartoma and their associated neuropsychiatric manifestations. We discuss the neuroimaging and histopathological findings of hypothalamic hamartomas. We present a timeline of the evolution of neurosurgical techniques for treating hypothalamic hamartomas as well as the surgical outcomes and associated complications. We highlight the etiology, lateralization, and localization of gelastic seizures. Finally, this case illustrates the mechanism of secondary epileptogenesis.
