摘要

This chapter aims to discuss the cultural, medicinal, and dietary significance of Garcinia kola Heckel (Clusiaceae) from a sustainability standpoint. The small- to medium-sized evergreen tree is native to the dense humid tropical rainforest ecosystems of West and Central Africa and grows alongside other traditionally valued forest crops. Also known as bitter kola or kola, the plant is deeply rooted in the cultures and traditions of West and Central Africa and has played a significant role in the lives of indigenous communities for centuries by offering a rich tapestry of uses and cultural significance. It bears bitter-tasting kola seeds. These seeds, with their intense bitternessBitterness, have become iconic and emblematic of the region’s cultural heritage. Some food uses of bitter kola include snacks, flavoring agents, preparation of traditional soup, beverage infusion, medicinal concoctions added to food, and condiments and seasoning. Some of the cultural significance of G. kola include as a symbol of hospitalitySymbol of hospitality, traditional rituals and ceremonies, traditional medicine, food, and flavoring (as seasoning), stimulant and energy boost, social and ceremonial uses (like weddings and religious gatherings), offering and prayers, cosmetic and skin care, trade and economic value, and cultural conservation. Bitter kola is renowned for its various medicinal properties, and it has been used in traditional African medicine for centuries. It contains garcinol which has shown promise in research for its anticancer effects as well as kolaviron which has therapeutic effects. Some medicinal uses and potential health benefits of bitter kola include antimicrobial properties, antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory effects, hepatoprotective properties, antidiabetic, antimalarial activity, cardiovascular health, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, anticancer potential, digestive aid and gut health improvement, aphrodisiac, and weight loss and management. The use of Garcinia kola for health management is generally considered safe when consumed and used in moderation. However, like many natural products, bitter kola should be used with caution, and excessive consumption can lead to potential adverse effects due to the bitter taste and sensitivity, caffeine content, potential allergic reactions, gastrointestinal distress, interactions with medications, and liver distress from overconsumption. Some herbal formulations prepared based on traditional knowledge that contain bitter kola include bitter kola extracts or tinctures, capsules, supplements, traditional herbal remedies, chewing sticks (snacks), traditional drinks and tonics (bitters), and honey infusions. This chapter suggests the need to incorporate sustainable practices and further research into the phytomedicinal and traditional benefits of the plant.
