Whole-body cryotherapy has been proposed to potentially influence the transformation of white adipose tissue (WAT) into brown adipose tissue (browning), with the prospect of enhancing energy expenditure and promoting improved metabolic health. Animal studies exploring the activation and induction of thermogenic adipocytes have yielded encouraging outcomes, demonstrating significant reductions in body weight and improvements in metabolic parameters. The intricate biological process of browning is subject to various factors, including specific nutrients and bioactive compounds. Although ongoing research is still elucidating the precise mechanisms, certain metabolites and bioactive compounds have been linked to fostering the browning of adipose tissue with or without a cold stimulus. This chapter delves into the role of metabolites and bioactive compounds in inducing the browning of adipocytes, with a specific focus on natural TRP agonists, offering a comprehensive overview of thermogenic natural bioactive compounds. By understanding the mechanisms and impacts of these compounds on adipocyte browning, researchers aspire to devise innovative therapeutic strategies for a spectrum of metabolic disorders and conditions related to obesity, potentially exploring combined therapies to maximize the advantages of whole-body cryotherapy.
