Cryostimulation as a Nonpharmacological Intervention for the Promotion of Mental Health: A Focus on Depressive and Anxiety Disorders
摘要
Whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) is a nonpharmacological intervention that involves exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures for a short duration, typically ranging from −110 °C to −160 °C (−166 °F to −256 °F), in a specialized cryochamber. While WBC is primarily known for its physical benefits, there is growing evidence suggesting that it may have positive effects on mental health as well. Recent studies have highlighted that WBC reduces inflammation throughout the body, including the central nervous system (CNS). Inflammation is known to play a role in various mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. Consequently, in reducing inflammation, WBC may help alleviate symptoms and improve overall mental health. In this chapter, we will review the published studies that have provided evidence for potential mental health benefits of WBC. However, it will be realized that the research in this area is still emerging, and that more rigorous scientific investigations are needed to establish conclusive evidence.
