Conclusion: Schelling Past, Present, and Future

Given how quickly the perception of Schelling has shifted in such a short span of time, it is a worthwhile endeavor to reflect on the past view of Schelling, what has come to light about Schelling in the interim to mandate his reevaluation in the present, and the future of Schelling. For while the Schellingians among us might take this new raising of Schelling’s position in philosophy and especially in the history of German Idealism as an axiom, it cannot be taken for granted that every reader—whether they be a student, a fellow specialist, or just someone just with an interest in philosophy—will share the intuition that this status is a long overdue recognition of the prestige to which he is entitled. So, let’s have a look at where the prejudices that formerly clouded the perception of Schelling came from and how the current state of Schelling scholarship proves, conclusively, the irreducible importance of Schelling in philosophy and the history of German Idealism in particular
