Unemployment and Decent Work in Nigeria

The craving for decent jobs in developing countries has posed a serious threat to employment which is an important challenge in attaining decent work in Nigeria. However, decent work is one of the important aspects of sustainable development goals (SDGs) which could help reduce inequality, empower people, and eradicate poverty. This has set the wheels of this review especially at the post-pandemic era of COVID-19 when most people lost their jobs and job creation was a serious problem. In developed countries, decent work could entail amendments to existing labor legislation, but the case is different for developing countries (Nigeria) where such privileges are not available. This desk research therefore focuses on the feasibility of decent work in an environment of increasing unemployment under the existing labor force in order to attain SDG 8 of the United Nations. It discusses the imperative transition to decent work to bring about reduction in the increasing rate of unemployment in Nigeria. Also, Nigeria is working tremendously to manifest high rates toward decent jobs, but the worsening situation of unemployment is a menace. This research therefore recommends the creation of new and restructuring of existing decent jobs to cope with unemployment threats and meet up with the SDG objectives in 2030.
