Energy Transition in West Africa as a Pathway to Sustainable Development
摘要
Renewable energy sources have the potential to contribute significantly to sustainable development in West Africa. With a population of over 400 million people, half of the region lacks access to reliable and affordable electricity. Incorporating renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and bioenergy into development plans is crucial for ensuring millions in the region have access to sustainable energy. This chapter examines the current status of energy in West Africa, the potential of renewable energy, and the challenges and barriers to energy transition. The chapter also highlights the importance of renewables in addressing several of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The challenges that may impede the transition on a political, economic, and social level are also discussed. This transition can ensure access to affordable and reliable energy for all, while promoting social equity by providing electricity access to marginalized communities. However, political instability, weak institutions, limited financing, and inadequate infrastructure are some of the challenges that must be addressed to ensure a successful transition to renewable energy in West Africa. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for supportive policies, regulatory frameworks, and financing to accelerate the energy transition in West Africa and promote sustainable development. West Africa has significant potential for renewables, which can be tapped into to make the region a leader in sustainable energy and achieve sustainable development.
