Climate Change Impact on Agriculture and Water Resources: Uzbekistan

This chapter gives a summary of a research in Uzbekistan that looked at the main social and technological issues surrounding the sustainable use of water and land resources in agriculture. In Uzbekistan, a concept for the implementation of national goals and objectives in the field of sustainable development for the period up to 2030 was developed in response to changing climatic conditions, increased droughts, changes in river flow, and an increase in water demand. A comparative analysis of the costs of agricultural land was carried out using the example of cotton production employing drip irrigation technology in some regions of the republic, based on the study of the experience of effective management of water and land resources in arid regions. In Kasbi district of Kashkadarya area, research is also being conducted on the effectiveness of implementing new technologies on irrigated agricultural lands. Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that the use of drip irrigation in agriculture, as well as the reconstruction of existing irrigation and drainage infrastructure in the context of climate change, will lead to the long-term sustainability of Uzbekistan’s water and land resource use.
