Place-Based Approaches to Integrated Environment Solutions

The notion of “place-based management” which is used widely in ecosystems management literature has relevance in finding interdisciplinary environmental solutions. This chapter discusses the opportunities and limitations of place-based approaches. Landscape ecology uses a holistic vision that aspires to integrate the dynamic complexity of complex systems to solve current environmental problems—but its roots in regional geography might provide some insights into the strength and weaknesses of place-based approaches. The traditional discipline of landscape ecology and its tools can be valuable for studying complex systems, interactions, and dynamics of processes. However, it has been criticized for the lack of a theoretical framework—a common criticism for most interdisciplinary research. The use of geospatially integrated interdisciplinary frameworks to find environmental solutions promoted here must overcome the impression of being descriptive and lacking a theoretical framework. This approach must be rigorous; its empirical foundation must be quantitative rather than qualitative, and its theoretical framework predictive rather than solely heuristic—even when using GeoAI and qualitative data. To develop and implement integrated interdisciplinary geospatial frameworks, there is no need to abandon the traditional emphasis of landscape ecology and place-based approaches but to carefully consider epistemological frameworks, expand investigations to include systems interactions over a range of spatio-temporal scales, and various sphere–event interactions. The use of geospatial technologies, when implemented with the above-mentioned considerations, can facilitate intellectual efforts that simultaneously allow us to see a problem under a microscope (close view) and with a telescope (long view) and can help remedy holistic paralysis.
