Case Study: The Role of Place/Space in Conservation and Multi-scale Analysis

This case study will demonstrate the use of an interdisciplinary, integrated approach for rethinking conservation efforts and will also discuss the opportunities and limitations of the multi-scale analysis. This study used a place-based approach and social-ecological systems (SES) lens to conduct a cross-scale nested analysis to identify the local, regional and global factors that impact the success of conservation efforts. The success of any conservation effort depends upon the interactions between social and ecological subsystems and governance arrangements. While traditional indicators used by biological scientists are essential for ensuring the success of any conservation efforts, they provide only a limited measurement of conservation success. Therefore, determining overall conservation success requires additional SES factors that impact the success/failure of conservation projects and include environmental, institutional, social, and conflict factors, which will require an integrated interdisciplinary framework. This chapter discusses methods for comparative analysis using a nested approach to identify factors that contribute to the success of conservation efforts at local, regional, and global scales. This case study will also discuss the uncertainties associated with the method used here, including the selection of study sites (i.e. the number of parks analyzed to identify regional factors and the number of regions to identify global factors). This multi-scale analysis is an essential concept because one of the major arguments for using a place-based approach related to complex systems includes its ability to generate information about SES at a local scale which can then be used to generate knowledge for the global community, but not without uncertainty.
