SKA: The Square Kilometre Array

By the mid-1990s, international radio astronomy had reached a cross-roads. Richard Jarrell was uncomfortably aware of this situation, and saw all too clearly that a new paradigm was needed to hoist the still budding science of radio astronomy to a greater fulfilment than—at least—Canada could foresee happening within its own boundaries. The first of the large radio interferometers were feeling their age. The international project “The Square Kilometre Array” was the answer, and Canada’s involvement is described here.
