Medicinal Plants in the Treatment of Diseases Caused by Influenza B Virus and Parainfluenza Virus Type 3

A tiny sort of parasite with a size range of 0.02–0.3 mm, viruses are made up of two primary components: genetic material (DNA or RNA) and a protein covering. Out of all the microorganisms, viral infections continue to be the major source of illness and mortality across the world. Ebola, AIDS, influenza, SARS, and, most recently, COVID-19 are the most aggressive outbreaks of viral infection on the planet. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the influenza virus was the most common cause of death in society. Influenza B and parainfluenza virus type 3 (acute respiratory infections) primarily affect children and the elderly. Influenza B viruses generate seasonal outbreaks and pose a significant public health threat. Type B influenza infection is usually milder than type A influenza, which affects the lungs, nose, and throat in both humans and mammals. Human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV3) is a single-stranded RNA virus, belonging to the family Paramyxoviridae, that majorly affects the lower respiratory tract of infants, the elderly, and immunocompromised people. Plants have played a vital role in therapeutic effects against many ailments since the dawn of human civilization on this planet. Several of these are utilized in the treatment of viral infections, particularly for infectious diseases like influenza B and parainfluenza type 3. Anti-viral compounds found in many plants, such as rutin, polyphenols, and flavonoid glycosides, are effective against avian influenza virus, HSV-1, HSV-2, and parainfluenza 3 viruses. In this context, several plants have been summed up that are effective against influenza and parainfluenza viruses.
