The utilization of mechanical circulatory assist (MCA) in the management of advanced heart failure is as old as heart transplantation (HTx). The first successful left ventricular assist device (LAVD) implantation was performed by Domingo Liotta and Michael DeBakey in a 37-year-old woman in 1966. In 1969, Denton Cooley implanted the first total artificial heart (TAH) developed by Domingo Liotta in a 47-year-old patient suffering from severe heart failure. Over half the century since, technology has seen vast developments in mechanical, electrical, miniaturization, and durability, leading to devices that can be implanted safely, maintained easily, and remotely with lesser complications and more freedom for patients.
