Introduction
摘要
This chapter introduces the interplay between Western and Chinese cultural influences in healthcare communication in Hong Kong, highlighting the need for culturally sensitive communication models tailored to the region’s unique hybrid healthcare system. By examining cross-cultural patient expectations, clinician experiences, and the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western practices, the chapter emphasizes the importance of fostering effective communication strategies that align with local cultural norms. It outlines key areas of healthcare interactions, including patient journeys, family involvement, and end-of-life care, and proposes practical frameworks for teaching and researching healthcare communication. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, the chapter provides valuable insights for clinicians, educators, and researchers aiming to enhance therapeutic relationships, improve patient safety, and advance culturally competent healthcare practices. Hong Kong’s healthcare system is positioned as a case study, offering global relevance for developing hybrid communication frameworks in diverse cultural contexts.
