Throughout this volume the concept of reinforcement has appeared as central to theories of decision, learning, authority, and choice. In the paper to follow Dr. Julian B. Rotter, and Dr. Shephard Liverant, both of the Department of Psychology at Ohio State University, join forces with Dr. Melvin Seeman, of the Department of Sociology, at UCLA to examine at length the effects of the nature of the reinforcement, particularly whether it is externally or internally controlled.
