Indications for Mandibular Setback/Advancement Using IVRO or Inverted L Osteotomy

Vertical splitting of the ascending mandibular branch is an old procedure. This technique is suitable when the mandible is to be repositioned, especially in class III correction, mandibular prognathism. This technique is no longer recommended for mandibular advancement. In regions with predominantly prognathic jaw types, this technique is popular because it can be performed quickly and is gentle on the tissue. Advantages of the BSSO, such as sufficient bone overlay, are eliminated. The stability of osteosynthetic stabilization cannot be compared with the possibilities of the BSSO. Even in the case of strong horizontal rotational movement, a vertical ramus osteotomy can be applied on the side facing the rotation.
