Special Surgical Aspects in Mandibular Advancement - Flaring

Due to the parabolic shape of the mandibular base, mandibular advancement by BSSO can lead to lateral or medial dislocation, or rotation about a vertical or also horizontal axis by the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in the proximal segment, depending on the replacement distance and the fracture behavior in the region of the mandibular split. Combinations of all three movements are possible, and they can occur unilaterally or bilaterally. Careful preoperative 3D planning provides valuable information to address this fact.
