DSE (ΔΣΕ): Insurgents of the Greek Civil War (1946–1949)

This chapter briefly examines the Democratic Army of Greece [Δημοκρατικός Στρατός Ελλάδας (ΔΣΕ)], the military wing of the Greek Communist Party (KKE) during the Greek Civil War (1946–1949), as proxy warriors of the Communist Bloc during the Cold War, and explains how the insurgents—who in 1947 controlled almost one-third of the territory of mainland Greece—were soundly defeated by late 1949.
