Renewable and clean energy technologies are fundamental in securing energy transition in the twenty-first century. These technologies mostly rely on local sources, for which subnational governments are key in guarantying energy transitions. Technological advances which have updated traditional sources and the development of new clean sources, carriers, converters, and services are boosted by digitalization. This interconnection represents more efficient processes in energy technology development; however, it also brings about a new danger, given that, what is interconnected is also easily hacked. Threats and cyberattacks to critical energy infrastructure have increased constantly, while subnational governments remain the weakest link of defense. This chapter addresses the technological and policy responses of subnational governments in North America (the USA and Canada) in supporting energy transition while also addressing the threats of digitalization and cyberattacks.
