Arab Common Market

  • Cenap Çakmak

摘要

This entry examines the evolution of the proposal for the establishment of an Arab common market, and an Arab customs union between members of the Arab League toward fulfillment of commonly shared goals regarding trade and economy in the broader Arab region. Proposed as a novel idea in early 1960s, the proposal to create an Arab Common Market has not yet been fully materialized due to the political rifts and inability of the members to deepen the degree of political and economic cooperation. Because it has been expounded in some of the texts adopted under the auspices of the Union, however, the idea still holds relevance and significance.
