Madinah Bâzâr
摘要
This entry elucidates the historical and cultural importance of the bâzâr/market, situated in the heart of Madinah, where the fundamental aspects of Islam, including its social, political, and economic underpinnings, were established. Madinah had a pivotal part in the establishment of Islamic society due to the relocation of the Prophet. The migration had a significant influence on the city’s appearance in terms of its economic impact. Initially, the city’s economic foundation relied on agriculture. However, with the rise of Islam and the influx of Muslim migrants, trade and economic activities gained significance. The Madinah Bâzâr serves as the initial demonstration of the pragmatic execution of Islamic economic principles. The prophets, by promoting fair trade and condemning dishonest profits and deceitful methods, established the fundamental principles of Islamic economics through their actions in the marketplace. The market prioritized the principles of equity, openness, and inclusivity in creating a conducive trading environment for Muslims. The oversight and control of the market is focused on promoting the economic well-being of the expanding Muslim minority and ensuring equitable trade practices. The economic framework of the Madinah Bâzâr was enhanced via the implementation of taxing policies initiated under the rule of Caliph Umar. Nevertheless, alterations implemented during the Umayyad era and the subsequent demolition of the market had a significant impact on the economic dynamics of the city. However, the Madinah Bâzâr remained a significant hub of economic activity as Muslims continued to engage in commerce.
