Modernism
摘要
The term “modernity” in the context of Islam is a term that is the subject of considerable debate and interpretation. A considerable number of contemporary scholars have characterized modernity as a natural process intrinsically linked to the evolution of human society. Conversely, traditional and orthodox scholars contend that modernity in contemporary times is synonymous with the adoption of Western values, culture, tradition, and way of life. The predominant interpretation among Muslim scholars is that modernity is conceptually analogous to the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment in Europe. Nontraditional and secular scholars, however, offer a different interpretation, characterizing modernity as a term referring to the adoption of modern technologies, lifestyles, and contemporary thought. These scholars posit that Islam, through the concept of ijtehad, enables the reinterpretation and transformation of Islamic principles and doctrines, thereby rendering them consistent with modern traditions. Conversely, traditionalists contend that the principle of ijtihad can only provide solutions to problems for which there is no clear directive in the Quran or hadith.
