The term mu’amalat, which is the plural of muamele meaning “legal transaction,” refers in its broad sense to the part of Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) that deals with matters outside of ibadat, and in a narrower sense, it primarily concerns rulings related to property and financial matters. Although this term has been used in the fiqh literature since the early periods, it became a well-defined and systematic concept after the third- or fourth-century Hijri. The rulings of mu’amalat, which are based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah, also form the foundation of the principles in Islamic economics. The basis of the interest-free financial system lies in the rulings of mu’amalat as well. Today, the principles of Islamic economics have become a subsector within the global financial system with institutional structures and are increasingly gaining influence.
