Demand
摘要
This entry examines the concept of demand, a key principle in economic theory, via the lens of Islamic economics. The first focus was on analyzing the definition of demand in traditional economics, along with its factors and the correlation between price and demand. Subsequently, the application of the notion in the Islamic economics literature and the fundamental characteristics of the Islamic interpretation are examined. Within the framework of conventional economics, demand is determined by the interplay of price within the market mechanism. Factors influencing demand encompass variables such as the price of the product, the prices of alternative goods and services, consumers’ income levels, consumers’ preferences, the size of the consumer base, income distribution within society, and consumers’ expectations and desires. In Islamic economics literature, the term “demand” is commonly used interchangeably with the term “consumption.” Nevertheless, according to the Islamic perspective on demand, the wants and needs of society that drive demand are constrained by the principles of Islamic law and within the boundaries of fundamental ethical standards. These norms encompass principles such as fairness, hygiene, modesty, frugality, resourcefulness, and abstaining from ostentation.
