Homoislamicus

Economic human models shaped by Western-centered economic perspectives, such as the Homo-Economicus model, which is based on selfish and hedonistic principles derived from Orthodox/Mainstream/Neo-Classical economic perspectives, do not adequately reflect the essence of Islamic societies. This discrepancy highlights the necessity to define a more suitable human model within the realm of Islamic economic thought and practices. In this context, the objective of this entry is to analyze the notion of Homoislamicus, also known as Insan-i Kamil, which is formulated based on Islamic values. Homoislamicus is an individual who seeks to achieve happiness in both worldly and the afterlife by adopting a lifestyle that is in accordance with the principles and beliefs of Islam. Islam’s perception of humanity positions individuals as a being who is not only focused on material gain, but also seeks spiritual peace and Allah’s consent. This paradigm enhances the development of a more robust social connection in society by motivating individuals to seek both spiritual and social benefits. The Homoislamicus model, shaped within the framework of Islamic values and principles, highlights the importance of being mindful of what is permissible (halal) and prohibited (haram), promoting fairness, generosity, frugality, and mutual support. These values cover crucial matters such as waste prevention in society, sustainable resource utilization, and the promotion of social equality and welfare. The basic principles and values of this piety (taqwa)-based perspective reflect an individual’s search for spiritual satisfaction and social harmony beyond material gain. At this juncture, it can be contended that the Homoislamicus model presents a robust alternative economic human model, aimed at enhancing both societal welfare and individuals’ spiritual contentment.
