Muḥammad Bāqir al-Sadr

Muhammad Baqir is a significant Shi’a scholar and thinker of the twentieth century. He has authored important works in various fields, including philosophy, economics, politics, and jurisprudence. Born in 1935 in Kadhimayn, Iraq, he completed his religious education in Najaf and rose to the rank of Ayatollah. Baqir developed an interest in philosophy and economics at a young age. Some of his notable works include Falsafatuna, Usul al-Falsafah, Iqtisaduna, Al-Madinah, and Durus fi ’Ilm al-Usul. He contributed significantly to Islamic thought, including bringing Islamic philosophy into dialogue with modern philosophical currents, developing an original theoretical framework in the field of Islamic economics, offering innovative interpretations in the field of Fiqh, and bringing a new perspective to Islamic political philosophy. He was also one of the founders of the Dawa Party, an Islamist political movement in Iraq. Unfortunately, he was arrested and executed in 1980 for his opposition to Saddam Hussein’s regime.
