Regional Cooperation for Development

This study explores the origins and undertakings of the Regional Cooperation for Development, an entity founded in 1964 by Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey with the aim of advancing regional collaboration. The organization’s establishment was largely motivated by the necessity for cooperation in areas such as political, military, economic, technical, and cultural domains. It was founded with the objective of economic coordination, and cooperation on tourism, communication, transport, and technical issues, rather than forming a political and military bloc. Though the organization agreed to collaborate in several areas, it has not yet succeeded in achieving all its goals. The comparable economic structures of member countries, along with the low level of mutual trade, insufficient funding, and conflicting interests, contributed to the failure of the organization to achieve its intended impact. Following the transformation of the organization into the Economic Cooperation Organization in 1985, regional cooperation efforts were pursued through a newly established framework. General information about the Regional Cooperation for Development initiative is presented in this entry, along with an analysis of the extent to which the intended cooperation overlaps with the developments achieved post-implementation.
