Alms (Zakat)
摘要
This text delves into the multifaceted concept of zakat, a religious duty in Islam that also serves as a social and economic mechanism. Zakat’s primary goal is to achieve fair wealth distribution while respecting private property rights, thereby reducing poverty and promoting social justice. Rooted in the Quran alongside obligatory prayer (salat), zakat is designed to purify both movable and immovable assets. It gained significance during the Medina era, with Prophet Muhammad and his companions emphasizing its collection. Initially collected individually, the central authority later took charge of zakat collection and distribution. The text outlines the conditions for zakat obligation, such as being a Muslim, free, and possessing a certain level of wealth. It also delineates the various categories of goods subject to zakat, including gold, silver, trade goods, animals, agricultural products, and minerals. The historical evolution of zakat regulations is explored, shedding light on its role as a fundamental economic institution in Islamic tradition.
